After a sting operation, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of the other co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, and co-founder Ismael Zambada Garcia were taken into custody in El Paso, Texas. In order to protect American lives from the fentanyl epidemic, President Biden referred to them as "two of the most notorious leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel" and underlined the US's commitment to bringing drug traffickers accountable. Emphasizing the need of transparency, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador demanded a "complete report" on the arrests. According to US law enforcement officials, Zambada was unintentionally lured across the border by Guzman Lopez while posing as an inspector of property in Mexico, which made it easier for the arrests to take place by taking advantage of a rift within the cartel.
