Ethiopian landslide death toll rises to 229: official

229 people have died as a result of two landslides in southern Ethiopia, and while search and rescue efforts continue, that number could rise. On Sunday night, there was a landslide in the Gofa zone in Southern Ethiopia. On Monday morning, there was another landslide that struck people who had gathered to help the first casualties.

The head of the National Disaster Response agency in the Gofa Zone, Markos Melese, stated that continued attempts are being made to recover bodies. At first, it was stated that children and police officers were among the at least 50 fatalities. People may be seen in the footage excavating remains with shovels and their bare hands. The number of fatalities rose when rescuers got caught in the next landslide.

Misikir Mitiku, the district administrator for Gofa, expressed her profound regret at the occurrence. In addition to expressing his sympathies, President Abiy Ahmed stated that federal personnel had been sent in to lessen the effects of the tragedy. The chairperson of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, emphasized the continued rescue operations and help for the displaced while expressing solidarity with Ethiopia.
