You can now search for songs on TikTok by humming or singing them.

"Sound Search," a new function from TikTok, is meant to compete with music detection apps like Shazam and YouTube Music. Sound Search, which is now being tested in a few areas, lets users recognize music by humming, singing, or making a sound. Beyond Shazam's requirement that the music actually be played, this capability not only detects songs but also plays videos that feature the identified tunes.

In tests, Sound Search did a good job of identifying well-known songs like Rihanna's "Umbrella" and related well-known videos, but it had trouble identifying lesser-known songs and occasionally gave generic results. Additionally, it was successful in identifying memes and noises unique to TikTok. To use Sound Search, users must press the microphone icon in the search bar of the app and choose "Sound Search."

This functionality is in line with TikTok's plan to improve its search engine optimization and establish itself as a top platform for finding music and sounds, upending the market domination of Shazam and YouTube Music. When Sound Search will be accessible to all users is still unknown according to the business.
