100 Injured in Quota-related Violence Between Bangladeshi Student Groups

Students backing the ruling Awami League party and anti-quota protestors engaged in violent altercations at Dhaka University. Rocks, sticks, iron rods, and machetes were used in the fight, which resulted in about 100 injurie including female victims. The quota system in question favors those who are in line with the government by reserving more than half of civil service positions for particular categories. There are still demonstrations calling for a merit-based system even after the Supreme Court suspended the quota system. While Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's provocative words and her administration's actions stoke larger resentment, the demonstrators accuse the ruling party's youth section of attacking their peaceful parade.
